Die USA leiden laut einem Regierungsbericht schon an den dramatischen Folgen des Klimawandels. Präsident Obama macht das Thema vor der Kongresswahl zur Chefsache.
Ein neuer Klimabericht der US-Regierung hat verheerende Folgen des durch den Menschen verursachten Klimawandels in allen Teilen der USA festgestellt. Während in trockenen Gegenden Wasser immer knapper werde, gebe es in feuchten Regionen zunehmend sintflutartige Regenfälle. Hitzewellen würden häufiger und schlimmer, ebenso wie großflächige Brände sowie Waldsterben durch Übergriffe von Insekten, schreiben die Wissenschaftler im National Climate Assessment.Weiterlesen auf zeit.de.
Einen Tag später musste Die Zeit eingestehen, dass ein großer Teil der Amerikaner die fragwürdige Klima-Panikmache des Präsidenten nicht nachvollziehen kann:

Dürren, Fluten, Stürme: Auf den dramatischen US-Klimabericht antworten die Republikaner mit Widerspruch, Spott und Gebeten. Obama setzt auf Geld.
[…] Auch James Inhofe, Republikaner aus Oklahoma, kritisierte Obamas „Agenda des Regulierens“. Sie würde Millionen von Arbeitsplätzen kosten. Lamar Smith, Republikaner aus Texas und ausgerechnet Vorsitzender des Wissenschaftsausschusses, nannte den Klimabericht ein „politisches Dokument, dass Amerikaner erschrecken soll: Sie sollen glauben, dass extremes Wetter Resultat des von Menschen verursachten CO2-Ausstoßes ist, tatsächlich gebe es aber kaum wissenschaftliche Belege für den Zusammenhang zwischen Klimawandel und Stürmen. Es ist unklar, wie Smith auf eine Zunahme des Extremwetters kommt. Roger Pielke Jr.hat sich den Bericht nämlich angeschaut und fand keinerlei Hinweis auf eine Extremisierung des Wetters. Besonders lesenswert sind dabei folgende Textpassagen (via Judith Curry):
–“There has been no universal trend in the overall extent of drought across the continental U.S. since 1900″
–“Other trends in severe storms, including the intensity & frequency of tornadoes, hail, and damaging thunderstorm winds, are uncertain”
–“lack of any clear trend in landfall frequency along the U.S. eastern and Gulf coasts”
–“when averaging over the entire contiguous U.S., there is no overall trend in flood magnitudes”
Judith Curry verurteilte den Bericht, da er natürliche Klimaschwankungen gänzlich ausbldendet und sämtliche Klimaänderungen der letzten Jahrzehnte dem Menschen anlastet. Dies ist wissenschaftlich falsch und widerspricht zudem den Aussagen des 5. IPCC-Klimaberichts. In ihrem Blog schrieb Judith Curry am 6. Mai 2014:
While there is some useful analysis in the report, it is hidden behind a false premise that any change in the 20th century has been caused by AGW. Worse yet is the spin being put on this by the Obama administration. The Washington Post asks the following question: Does National Climate Assessment lack necessary nuance? In a word, YES.
The failure to imagine future extreme events and climate scenarios, other than those that are driven by CO2 emissions and simulated by deficient climate models, has the potential to increase our vulnerability to future climate surprises (see my recent presentation on this Generating possibility distributions of scenarios for regional climate change). As an example, the Report highlights the shrinking of winter ice in the Great Lakes: presently, in May, Lake Superior is 30% cover by ice, which is apparently unprecedented in the historical record.
The big question is whether the big push by the White House on climate change will be able to compete with this new interview with Monica Lewinsky 🙂
David Kreutzer hat sich auf The Daily Signal einmal die Mühe gemacht, die größten Schnitzer des neuen National Climate Assessment-Berichts (NCA) aufzuklären:
NCA Quote: “Precipitation patterns are changing”
Reality: Precipitation patterns were never constant. Creating a crisis from the normal allows climate catastrophists to point to every abnormal bit of wet or dry as being “consistent with models” that predict one horrible outcome or another.
NCA Quote: “sea level is rising”
Reality: Yes sea level is rising, which it has done since the end of the last ice age. But the frequent claims and predictions of accelerating sea-level rise are not borne out in the data. In fact sea-level rise has slowed recently. One main-stream climatologist says this variation “makes the 21st century of sea level rise projections seem like unjustified arm waving.”
NCA Quote: “the frequency and intensity of some extreme weather events are increasing”
Reality: The latest report on the science from The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and analysis provided by the adminstration’s own National Climatic Data Center conclude that there isn’t a case for extreme weather increases – no significant trends for floods, droughts, hurricanes or tornadoes.
NCA Quote: “In Arctic Alaska, the summer sea ice that once protected the coasts has receded”
